Tottenham in three-horse race for Premier League midfielder but face a big roadblock

Tottenham Hotspur have been joined in the race to sign Adam Wharton by two Champions League hopefuls and the North London club are expected to face some difficulty in prising the midfielder away from Selhurst Park this summer as Crystal Palace’s stance becomes clear.

Even though Wharton’s season has been interrupted by injuries, which have prevented the midfielder from hitting the heights that he did when he first arrived at Palace this campaign, it has done little to dampen Tottenham’s interest.

It has been widely reported over recent weeks that the Lilywhites are targeting quality homegrown additions in the summer, with Spurs having Adam Wharton high on their wishlist.

However, a fresh report has now suggested that two other Premier League sides are now ready to challenge Spurs in the race for the midfielder.

Tottenham in a three-way tussle for Adam Wharton

GiveMeSport have now claimed that Tottenham could find themselves in a ‘tug-of-war’ to land the England international as Aston Villa and Newcastle have now expressed an interest in the player.

The recruitment chiefs at Villa and the ones at St James’ Park are said to be monitoring Wharton closely, with both clubs poised to enter the race to sign him when the transfer market reopens in June.

Crystal Palace are aware of the interest in the midfielder’s services and expect to ‘face a battle’ to keep him at the club beyond this summer

It is revealed that while Manchester United also previously explored a move for the former Blackburn man, their interest in the player has now cooled.

A deal for Wharton will not be straightforward

It is pointed out by GiveMeSport that it will not be easy for any of these clubs to prise Wharton away from Selhurst Park.

The report reveals that the Eagles valued the midfielder at £60m during the January window, and with the player still having four years left on his deal, Oliver Glasner’s men find themselves in a strong negotiating position.

Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Newcastle may face a tough task in convincing Palace to sell, especially since Wharton is happy at the South London club and is not expected to agitate for a move.
