Tottenham, Juventus and AC Milan all still monitoring centre-back – Fabrizio Romano

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Lloyd Kelly could have been a Tottenham Hotspur player last summer if Eric Dier had agreed to go to Bournemouth as a part of the deal.

It is not difficult to understand why Kelly is so highly sought after, with left-footed centre-backs being a rare commodity at the highest level.

In addition, the Englishman is technically gifted and quick while his ability to fill in at left-back is another string to his bow.

Tottenham are still looking at Lloyd Kelly

Tottenham’s interest in the Bournemouth star was well-documented during last summer’s transfer window and if Romano’s latest update is to be believed, Ange Postecoglou’s men came quite close to landing the player.

The journalist explained that Spurs were willing to offer Dier to the Cherries but the 29-year-old did not want to move to the South Coast club, and when Spurs returned with a cash offer, it was too late.

Romano further added that the Lilywhites will face a lot of competition for Kelly’s services next summer, with the centre-back expected to leave Bournemouth on a free transfer in June.

The journalist told GiveMeSport about Tottenham’s interest in the defender: “They are still monitoring his situation. It is not only Tottenham, but last summer Tottenham were quite close to completing the deal.

“They offered Eric Dier as part of the deal to Bournemouth, but the player didn’t want to proceed with the negotiations with Bournemouth. Then they tried to sign the player without Dier, but Bournemouth said no, because they had no time to replace the player so they decided to continue with him.

“Now it’s not only Tottenham, because there are other clubs, including Juventus, including AC Milan, including other clubs in Germany and in England. So I think it’s an open situation for Kelly, but I think he’s going to leave on a free and there are many clubs interested, including Tottenham.”

The big advantage that clubs outside England have is the fact that they can agree on a pre-contract agreement with Kelly before the summer.

However, one would think that the lure of staying in the Premier League for the centre-back would play into Tottenham’s hands, as would the fact that the club have been long-term admirers of the player.
