Tottenham legend claims he would sell up to eight players this summer

In an interview with Football Fan Cast, Graham Roberts has claimed that Tottenham should sell up to eight players in this summer transfer window.

Graham Roberts is an iconic figure around N17 for his role in Tottenham’s glorious sides of the 1980s when he won the UEFA Cup and two FA Cup’s in his time with the club.

The former defender has now been making big claims about the current squad and the need to re-shape it after another disappointing season in which Spurs only just qualified for the Europa Conference League.

Roberts claimed that he would get rid of eight players and even went as far as to name some of those he believes should be offloaded.

He said: “Me personally, there would be eight players that I would get rid of.

“There will be the two right-backs Aurier and Doherty, I’d let Sanchez go. Although, saying that if I had to keep him, I would let Dier go, Winks go.

“They’re just squad players and they’re not happy being squad players, so it just causes you problems.”

Tottenham appointed Nuno Espírito Santo after a long managerial search and the Portuguese manager, at Wolves, famously kept a very small pool of players to work with despite even competing in the psychically demanding Europa League during the 2019/2020 season.

This stance further enhances the need to re-shape the squad to Nuno’s wishes. Juan Foyth is the only first-team player who has left so far; he has joined Villarreal permanently.

Graham Roberts has made points that many Spurs fans would straight away agree with. One of the Spurs’ biggest downfalls in the years gone by is offloading deadwood at the right time. It is very important to get fresh blood in this summer, but it is as important to let go of players who are past their sell-by date.
