Tottenham legend gives Emerson Royal verdict after first three appearances

Spurs legend Graham Roberts has now given his verdict on new signing Emerson Royal after a handful of appearances this season.

Roberts believes the Brazilian full-back is a good player and he will be able to improve the team as the season goes on.

Emerson was signed during the summer transfer window from Barcelona for around £22.5 million as a replacement for Serge Aurier, whose contract was terminated at Spurs after four years at the club.

Emerson has been thrown in at the deep end at the start of his Tottenham career with his debut coming in the 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace where he faced a tough task up against Wilfried Zaha.

Royal’s second appearance came against Chelsea in the 3-0 loss at home but yet again, Emerson showed enough promise to make the right-back spot his own.

The Brazilian is seemingly in direct competition with Japhet Tanganga for the starting right-back role with Irish international Matt Doherty further down the pecking order.

Roberts said: “He’s a good player, he looks a good player, so hopefully we’ve got somebody that’s going to stay at Tottenham and help us push up that league.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

It is tough to judge Emerson Royal’s start to his Tottenham career. Having your first game in English football up against Wilfried Zaha is an extremely tough assignment where even the best full-backs in the league would struggle. However, Emerson has shown glimpses of quality and will only improve as the season goes on.
