Tottenham legend reveals he wanted to sign for West Ham United

Tottenham legend, Paul Gascoigne has now revealed that he almost signed for London rivals West Ham United as a youngster.

Gazza played for the Lilywhites between 1988 and 1992 after he left Newcastle United, but it appears the iconic England attacker wanted a West Ham move even before that.

Gascoigne told YouTube JaackMate for The SportBible that, when he was just 18, he wanted to move from Newcastle to West Ham and even phoned the Magpies pretending to be his own agent.

However, Newcastle quickly realised who was on the other end of the phone and put an end to talks of an exit, according to the former Spurs man.

Gazza played over 90 games for Spurs in the league and scored 19 goals in that time before eventually moving abroad to Lazio where he spend the next three years of his career.

He said: “I nearly signed for West Ham, I wanted to…when I was 18.

“I knew West Ham were a good team and I pretended I was my own agent and rang up Newcastle United and said ‘I’m Paul Gascoigne’s agent, he wants to move to West Ham’, they said Gazza you’re not going anywhere and put the phone down.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Tottenham did incredibly well to beat the big names to Gascoigne back in 1988 as he always seemed destined to the top. Spurs fans really were lucky to get four good years out of the talented midfielder before he moved on. Thankfully, that move to West Ham didn’t happen at age 18.
