Tottenham legend reveals his unexpected player of the season

Moussa Sissoko joined Tottenham Hotspur from Newcastle United for £30 million in the summer of 2016 (BBC).

The French midfielder had a tough time during his first two years at the north London club, however, his recent performances have impressed many fans and experts.

Sissoko has featured in 84 games in all competitions for the Lilywhites, finding the net once.

He has, nonetheless, become a key man in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, benefiting from Mousa Dembele’s January exit, Victor Wanyama’s knee problems and Eric Dier’s irregular availability.

The former Newcastle man’s most recent performance against Huddersfield left many people in awe of the transformation which the player has gone through.

The 29-year old started the Premier League match against the Terriers on Saturday, his 25th start in that competition this season.

Sissoko managed to get an assist, helping Lucas Moura find the net for Spurs’ second goal. He also made a number of impressive tackles, assisting Foyth and Vertonghen in defence and helping to keep a clean sheet.

This astonishing performance impressed former Tottenham defender Ledley King who hailed the powerful midfielder as the best player of the season, putting him above the likes of Heung-min Son and Harry Kane.

After the victory against Huddersfield, King said (Express): “It’s great play from Sissoko and he’s been doing this most of the season.

“Driving from midfield and he’s put a great little ball at the end of it and it’s a great finish from Lucas.

“Yeah I do [think he has been Spurs’ best player this season].

“I think he’s been so important.

“Obviously we know how big a player Dembele was for the club and how important he was.

“But I feel that Sissoko has almost filled that space.

“His physical presence in midfield, his power, very difficult to get past in defensive positions and he’s got that driving force that we know Dembele did have where he could beat a man and drive past people.

“And Sissoko’s showing that side as well.”

Spurs came out victorious in the clash against Huddersfield, putting four goals inside the Terriers’ net and keeping a clean sheet. Tottenham are back to third in the Premier League table.
