Tottenham Hotspur want to sign midfielder Wilmar Barrios from Boca Juniors in January, according to The Daily Star on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been heavily linked with a move for the Colombia international since he impressed at this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

The 25-year-old has a £16million release clause in his contract with the Argentinean outfit, but Spurs could face competition from Spanish giants Real Madrid, who are said to be prepared to offer £20million to secure his services.

After failing to bring in any new players during the summer transfer window, should Spurs be successful with a bid for Barrios then he would become the first new face at the club since the arrival of Lucas Moura last January.

Barrios is known for his tough tackling in midfield and could be considered a potential replacement for Mousa Dembele.

The 31-year-old’s contract at Tottenham expires this summer and has previously been linked with big money moves to China and the Middle East.

Dembele will today learn the extent of his ankle injury after the midfielder limped off in last night’s victory against Wolves.
