Tottenham look set to miss out on transfer target

Tottenham Hotspur look set to miss out on one of their rumoured transfer targets from the summer transfer window.

With doubts about the future of Toby Alderweireld, the club were heavily linked with a move for young Ajax central defender Matthijs de Ligt.

Today, Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo are reporting that Catalan giants Barcelona have already begun the process of signing the 19-year-old.

Ajax are not being forced to sell the Dutch international with his current contract set to expire in 2021, the report claims that the transfer could cost at least €70 million (£61m) after add-ons and bonuses.

de Ligt’s mature performances at the heart of defence have been attracting interest from all over Europe with Manchester City also said to have been monitoring his situation.
