Tottenham make shock approach for Liverpool hero with verbal agreement in place

We are now deep into the January transfer window and it seems Tottenham have pulled out the big guns with their latest move.

So far this month, we’ve seen Tottenham snap up Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, and young full-back Souza finally arrived from Santos.

There’s still work to be done in the market if Spurs are to give Thomas Frank the tools he needs to turn this season around, though.

The next Tottenham deal to be confirmed is one no one really saw coming, though, with the Lilywhites pushing to sign one of Liverpool’s longest-serving players.

Tottenham hoping to reach agreement for Andy Robertson deal

According to a report from The Athletic, Tottenham have been eyeing up a deal for Liverpool icon Andy Robertson.

The Scottish stalwart is due to be a free agent in the summer and Spurs had put themselves on the long list of suitors hoping to snap him up at the end of the season.

However, it’s now said Tottenham have decided to get ahead of the curve and are pushing to bring Robertson in immediately rather than waiting.

Spurs chiefs are keen to back Thomas Frank and improve his squad quickly, especially given the injury issues behind the scenes.

Apparently, negotiations have progressed well between all parties. Liverpool are happy to give Robertson the move he deserves, while the player himself is seemingly keen to join Tottenham.

Indeed, according to Florian Plettenberg, a verbal agreement has been reached between Robertson and Spurs and it’s now just down to the two clubs to sort out the finer details. No fee is mentioned yet, and that will likely be the main topic of discussion between Liverpool and Tottenham.

Robertson is actually a perfect signing for Spurs

Robertson has previously and very recently reiterated his desire to stay at Liverpool, but did admit he is “a player who wants to play”. That will suit Tottenham down to the ground.

While Thomas Frank is excited about Souza’s arrival, it remains to be seen whether the youngster is quite ready to make an impact immediately at Spurs.

In that sense, the signing of Robertson is an ideal move by Tottenham. This is a player who brings immense experience and undeniable quality, as well as leadership and passion.

With injuries hitting the Spurs squad hard, they need someone like Robertson who can step in and get a job done. This is a no-brainer for Tottenham, and if they can get this over the line, it could well be the best signing they make this month.
