Tottenham man creates history as Ballon d’Or results emerge

Son Heung-min has finished 11th in the Men’s Ballon d’Or rankings for 2022, becoming the highest-ranked Asian in the award’s history, according to Squawka.

The 66th edition of the prestigious Ballon d’Or award took place yesterday evening in Paris with Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema being crowned Europe’s best player.

Son and Harry Kane were among the 30 names nominated for the award on the back of another impressive season in front of goal for Spurs.

Son, who became the first Asian player to win the Premier League Golden Boot last season, has now created more history by achieving the highest rank of any player from the continent.

Meanwhile, Kane finished in 21st place, behind the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Diaz and Sebastien Haller.

Meanwhile, Hugo Lloris was nominated for the Yachine Trophy, which is awarded to the best goalkeeper over the course of a campaign. The award was won by Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois, with Liverpool’s Alisson Becker and Manchester City’s Ederson coming second and third respectively.

This is a great achievement for Son but one can argue that he should have finished even higher after the season he had in 2021/22. There is no doubt that finishing 21st is unfair on Kane, who has had an excellent 2022.
