Tottenham man picks up assist in first full 90 minutes on loan since October

Giovani Lo Celso picked up an assist for Villarreal but could not stop the club from falling to a 2-1 loss at home to Real Valladolid on Saturday.

Lo Celso picked up a hamstring injury back in October, which not only kept him out of Argentina’s historic World Cup campaign but also saw him miss several games for Villarreal since La Liga’s restart.

The midfielder returned to full fitness at the start of this month and he was handed his first start in almost five months at the Santiago Bernabeu two weeks ago.

The on-loan Tottenham man played 67 minutes in that game as Villarreal emerged with a famous 3-2 win from the Spanish capital.

Lo Celso followed that up with his first full 90-minute appearance on Saturday in almost six months.

The 27-year-old did not show signs of too much rustiness and put in an accomplished display and he laid off the ball to former Spurs midfielder Etienne Capoue in the second half as the Frenchman rifled home a shot from outside the box.

However, Quique Setien’s side were unable to find a late equaliser, with Valladolid hanging on for all three points.

Interestingly, Setien used Lo Celso as a false nine against Real Madrid but reverted him back to a midfield three on Saturday, with the on-loan Spurs man playing more of a box-to-box role.

One can argue that despite the 27-year-old obvious talent, he still has not found his best position.
