Tottenham man reacts after being racially abused during international fixture

Richarlison was racially abused during Brazil’s win over Tunisia on Tuesday, with the Tottenham striker having had a banana thrown at him during the match in Paris, according to The Independent.

Richarlison had a productive outing at the Parc des Princes after he netted a goal and provided an assist to help the Selecao emerge 5-1 winners.

However, the game was marred by an ugly incident as the Spurs star had a banana reportedly thrown at him as he wheeled off to celebrate after scoring Brazil’s second.

Footage shows Manchester United midfielder Fred kicking the banana away after it was thrown onto the pitch.

Ironically, ahead of the game, the Brazil team had posed for photographs with an anti-racism banner which read, ‘Without our black players, we wouldn’t have stars on our shirts’.

The Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) has issued a statement on social media confirming the incident.

CBF’s statement reads: “After Brazil’s second goal, a banana was thrown towards Richarlison. The CBF reinforces its stance against discrimination and vehemently repudiates yet another episode of racism in football.”

Richarlison has also taken to social media to post a strongly worded message, asserting that things will not change if the authorities do not enforce strong punishments for these kinds of actions.

The 25-years-old wrote: “As long as they stay “blah blah blah” and don’t punish, it will continue like this, happening every day and everywhere. No time bro!”

As despicable as this is, unfortunately, it is not too surprising and has become commonplace over recent years, particularly during international fixtures.

Richarlison is right in saying that these idiots will not be deterred unless the teams are hit with strong punishments, such as having to play behind closed doors.
