Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas has said that he and his colleagues are at a loss as to who Tottenham’s top centre-back target is in the final few days of the transfer window.

Micky van de Ven has hardly put a foot wrong since arriving at Tottenham and his partnership with Cristian Romero already has the makings of a solid one.

However, it has been widely reported over the past couple of weeks that Ange Postecoglou wants to bring another centre-back through the door before the transfer window closes (Football Insider).

That perhaps does not come as a surprise given that Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez are both expected to leave (Evening Standard) while Spurs are also reportedly trying to offload Eric Dier (90 min).

Tosin Adarabioyo, who has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs, now appears to be edging closer to a move to Monaco (Fabrizio Romano), and Thomas has now said that he and other journalists need to do some digging to find out which centre-back the Lilywhites are looking to sign.

Journalists do not know Spurs’ top centre-back target

The journalist told the Last Word on Spurs podcast about the club’s centre-back pursuit: “Spurs still have one option, I’m trying to find out who that option is and if another player has come into play. Tosin Adarabioyo is looking increasingly unlikely, Perr Schuurs is one they like, but he’s right-footed.

“There’s some work to do on my behalf and for other journalists out there to figure out who this option is and if it’s one we’ve already spoken about or another one who has come into play. That does happen, new players come onto the radar, yeah.”

If Brennan Johnson turns out to be Tottenham’s only attacking signing over the coming days and the club decide not to pursue a deal for an out-and-out centre-forward, that would mean that they still have a bulk of the Kane fee to play with.

So, perhaps they might consider a  surprise big-money move for a top centre-back such as Marc Guehi. Having said that, Van de Ven and Romero are going to be our first-choice pairing, which is why it might make sense to spend big on another central defender.
