Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a major blow in their pursuit of a forward who has already scored 18 goals this season.
With the transfer market now officially open, the Lilywhites can now finally reinforce their squad and give Thomas Frank the tools he needs to get the club up the table.
It has been widely reported over recent months that the Spurs are looking to strengthen their attack in January, and a prolific Spanish striker is thought to be on their wishlist.
Multiple sources have reported that Tottenham have made advances towards Samu Aghehowa, who has found the back of the net 18 times in 24 matches for Porto this season.
It was previously claimed that Porto would be willing to sell the Spurs target for £70m in January, but it has now emerged that a deal this month would prove difficult for the Lilywhites.

Samu Aghehowa wants to remain at Porto despite Tottenham’s advances
According to a report in Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness), the Spain international is extremely unlikely to leave Estadio do Dragao mid-season.
The outlet claims that ‘there is nothing concrete’ regarding Spurs’ interest in Aghehowa, who remains committed to Porto for now.
The 21-year-old is happy with life in Portugal and is not thinking about leaving the club for now.
With the World Cup coming up in the summer, the centre-forward wants to continue playing regularly and impressing at Porto to give himself the best chance of being on the plane to North America.
What is Porto’s stance on Aghehowa?
Sport also says that despite the prospect of potentially picking up a big fee for the young starlet, Porto are not considering selling him in January.
With Luuk de Jong out with a serious injury, the Portuguese club cannot afford to lose another striker this month.
Additionally, Francesco Farioli’s men are sitting at the top of the table and also want to compete in the Europa League, and thus, have no intention of selling their best player.
