Tottenham must now shift focus, but Daniel Levy may not agree – Jamie Redknapp

Tottenham Hotspur have been left reeling after a dramatic collapse in their 4-3 defeat to Chelsea this weekend. With injuries and inconsistent performances plaguing the squad, one former Spurs star believes the club must now make a crucial decision that could change their fortunes.

Tottenham’s struggles and the growing frustration

Tottenham Hotspur’s season has been filled with moments of promise followed by harsh realities. After securing a thrilling victory against Manchester City just weeks ago, expectations were high.

However, their recent defeat to Chelsea, where they squandered a 2-0 lead and conceded four goals following Cristian Romero’s injury, has cast a shadow over their season.

The loss left the Lilywhites in the bottom half of the Premier League table, far from the lofty heights they aspire to reach.

With every loss, the pressure mounts, especially on manager Ange Postecoglou, whose early promise has yet to translate into sustained success.

What adds to the frustration is the failure to build on positive moments. Spurs had hoped that their remarkable win over Manchester City would be the catalyst for a run of form, yet instead, they have stumbled once again.

With the team now facing tough competition for the top four spot, it is clear that something has to change—quickly. Enter Jamie Redknapp, who believes there is a way forward for Spurs, but it may not align with the owners’ expectations.

Redknapp’s bold call for Tottenham to forget top-four

Jamie Redknapp, a former Tottenham midfielder and now a Sky Sports pundit, has been vocal about what the club must do next.

In the aftermath of their Chelsea defeat, Redknapp expressed a belief that many fans will likely share: winning a trophy should take precedence over securing a top-four finish.

His comments, while potentially at odds with the club’s owners, echo the frustrations felt by supporters who have seen too many seasons of near-misses.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp explained his stance: “They have to win a trophy – that’s the stick they are beaten with. If they win a trophy this year it will give them confidence and belief that they can get top four. They need to change the history of this club,

“For too long they’ve had an attitude of not being successful and letting people down. Whereas if they win a trophy it will give Ange a bit of breathing space.

“They’ve got Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, they can win that. If you look at the winners of that trophy recently it’s either been Man City, Man Utd or Liverpool. Winning that is more important than finishing top four. The owners may disagree but it would great for the fanbase and the players.”

Prioritising a trophy could change Tottenham’s trajectory

In a season where consistency has eluded them, Redknapp’s call to prioritise a trophy over the top four might seem bold, but it is a strategic shift that could work wonders for Tottenham.

The impact of winning a cup cannot be underestimated—it would provide a tangible sense of achievement, something that has been sorely lacking at Spurs for years. In a season marked by setbacks, the boost a trophy could give to the players, manager, and fans alike would be immense.

Ange Postecoglou himself predicted that he would deliver trophies in his second season, and the Carabao Cup presents a realistic chance of fulfilling that promise.

By focusing on a trophy this season, Tottenham can build the momentum needed to move forward. It could also help improve Postecoglou’s standing with the fans, who have already endured so many years of unfulfilled potential.
