Hojbjerg looks set to leave Tottenham this summer

The Danish international moved to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in August 2020 for a fee of around £15million while Jose Mourinho was in charge (Sky Sports).

Hojbjerg enjoyed regular first-team football under the Portuguese and was also a mainstay in the Spurs first team squad under Antonio Conte’s time in N17.

The 28-year-old has found game time more limited since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou last summer, having fallen behind the likes of Pape Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma in the midfield pecking order.

With just eight starts in his 36 Premier League appearances last season, the Dane is now entering the last year of his contract and has been heavily linked with a summer exit (transfermarkt).

Having come close to joining Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2023 only for the move to fall through, he has again been linked with a move to the La Liga outfit (transfermarkt).

Hojbjerg is not Atletico Madrid’s primary transfer target

Spanish news outlet AS are reporting that the Tottenham midfielder is further down Atletico’s shopping list this year behind Celtic’s Matt O’Riley and Conor Gallagher of Chelsea.

Hojberg is said to be considered as the ‘last option’ for Atletico currently and is awaiting developments over a possible move to Spain.

Turkish news outlet Sabah, claimed earlier this month that Mourinho is eager to make Hojbjerg his first signing at Fenerbahce.

SpursWeb Opinion

Hojbjerg definitely needs to leave Tottenham this summer if wants regular football, however, it appears that a move to Spain could be off the cards.

A reunion with Jose Mourinho who is now in charge of Fenerbahce could be one potential option, however, it remains to be seen whether the player would want to go to a less competitive league at this stage of his career.

A quick look at his stats for last season below goes a long way to highlight that he is not suited to Ange Postecoglou‘s style of play given his limitations to contribute in the attacking areas.
