The full-time whistle has blown in the Carabao Cup clash between Tottenham and Charlton Athletic, and it is time for our player ratings.
Tottenham full-time player ratings vs Charlton
Antonin Kinsky – He was forced into a few saves in the first half, but Kinsky proved equal to the task. In the second half, he was barely tested. Charlton finally managed a goal from a set-piece, but there was little Kinsky could do to prevent the goal. 7.
Archie Gray – Showed his class throughout the clash, starting at full-back in the first half but barely sticking there as he overlapped and even found himself in the box, managing to draw a save before the break. In the second half, he continued to find himself in the box and let fly on a few occasions, but his efforts were saved. He was eventually moved into midfield following Porro’s introduction. The youngster’s efforts were rewarded as he grabbed an assist for Savio’s first goal in a Tottenham shirt. 8.5
Jan Paul van Hecke – It was a commanding centre-back display from the Dutchman throughout the game. In the first 45, Van Hecke showed his ability to defend wide spaces when he was forced to cover for the overlapping Gray. He also showed his aggression, often pushing up into midfield to stop attacks. His passing remained crisp as well. In the second half, it was more of the same, although he was forced into less defending as Spurs started brightly and dominated proceedings. 7.
Ben Davies – The Tottenham centre-back had little to worry about in the first half and often looked to drive with the ball at his feet before the break. In the second 45, Charlton barely threatened when he was on the field. He did get Spurs’ fifth of the night after Savinho’s shot came off him as the ball made its way to the post. 7.
Destiny Udogie – A good runout for the full-back here, who was full of running, often overlapping Mathys Tel. The two combined beautifully on the left of Spurs’ attack in both halves, causing the Championship side a lot of trouble. 8.
Rodrigo Bentancur – It was a tidy display throughout the game, both before the break and in the second half, with Bentancur keeping things tidy in the middle of the park with his passing, and it is no surprise he managed the assist for Moore’s opener. 7.5.
Mateus Fernandes – It was the perfect outing for the new signing in what was his home debut for Tottenham. Fernandes was superb against Charlton, grabbing an assist in the second half following a free-kick. But that was not his only contribution. in the first half, his range of passing and ability to link up with teammates stood out just as much. 8.
Lucas Bergvall – Spurs kept pushing in the second half, and Bergvall looked eager to join the action. He showed far more willingness to get into the box and underlap Moore, and he was noticeably more direct, taking on several efforts from outside the area. Earlier in the first half, his role was different – he was asked to drift wider when Tottenham had possession as they looked to overload Charlton’s left side. 7.5.
Mikey Moore – He most certainly was the best player in the first half after managing a goal and an assist following a very lively display. He did pick up from where he left off in the second half, with more direct running as well as linking up with his teammates, Bergvall and Gray, on the right. A top, top display. 8.
Dominic Solanke – The Tottenham centre-forward got his first of the season in the first half after reacting quickest to a mix-up in the box of the Championship side with a well-taken finish. In the second half, he barely had a sniff as chances were few and far between. 7.
Mathys Tel – After a quieter first half, the Frenchman came to life in the second half with more direct running at the Charlton Athletic defence. He and Udogie also continued to link up well on the left, with both often hitting the byline and trying to get a cross into the box. He did hit the target in the second half after an acrobatic effort from inside the box, but his effort was well saved. 8.
Substitutes
Micky van de Ven – The Dutchman came on for his first appearance of the season and was forced into defending a few times when Charlton looked to get in behind, showing his pace and dealing with the situation when they threatened. 7.
Kevin Danso – The centre-back came on and scored with his first touch after heading in from Mateus Fernandes’ cross from a free-kick. 8.
Pedro Porro – His first appearance of the season saw Porro replace Lucas Bergvall as De Zerbi looked to shuffle things around. The Spaniard came on and went straight in at full-back, linking up well with new signing Savio down on the right of Spurs’ attack. 7.
Savio – The new signing made his debut from the bench and looked lively in the brief moment he was on the pitch, driving at his full-back and linking well with a few of his teammates. He eventually got his debut goal after scoring from a low drive, beating the keeper at his near post. He then thought he had grabbed a second a few minutes later after dribbling through a crowded box and beating the keeper at the near post again with a similar finish. However, the goal was given to Ben Davies, who had a touch as it found its way into the post. 8.
Luca Williams-Barnett – Came on for Mathys Tel and filled in at right wing with a little over ten minutes to go. N/A.
