Tottenham player suffers penalty heartbreak

Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed rare success in a penalty shoot out last week when they beat rivals Chelsea 5-4 to book their place in the Carabao Cup quarter final.

There was heartbreak for one member of Jose Mourinho’s side last night when Matt Doherty missed his effort in the Republic of Ireland’s Euro 2020 play-off semi-final in Slovakia.

With the score level at 0-0 at full time, the match went to penalties with the right-back stepping up to take Ireland’s fourth attempt after Alan Browne had missed before him, only to see it his shot from twelve yards hit the crossbar.

The defeat ended Ireland’s hopes of qualifying for the European Championship Finals next summer.

Doherty was one of Tottenham’s six summer arrivals having made the move to North London in a £15million deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers (Independent) and has made five appearances for his new club in all competitions and was named as an unused substitute in the recent win against Chelsea (transfermarkt).
