Tottenham player thinks he ‘deserves’ an international recall for the Euros

Eric Dier feels he has done well enough since the last World Cup to warrant a recall to the England squad ahead of the European Championship this summer.

Dier has won 49 caps for England but he has not been a part of the Three Lions set-up since the World Cup in Qatar.

In that time, the centre-back saw himself fall out of favour at Tottenham, having hardly had a look in under Ange Postecoglou at the start of the season.

However, since making the move to Bayern in January, the 30-year-old has got regular football under his belt and he has delivered some solid displays.

Eric Dier wants a recall to the England squad

The centre-back insisted that he feels his form since the last World Cup has been good and admitted that he is desperate to get back into the England squad.

He said on The Overlap: “Obviously, I want to be a part of the England set-up and I believe that I should be a part of it, that I’m that level of a player. I haven’t spoken at all to Gareth Southgate, but you try and play as well as possible for your club and then the decision is out of your hands.

“Since the World Cup, I wouldn’t say that I’ve had any dip in form, I’m playing the best football of my career since Conte came [to Tottenham] and I’ve carried it on since I’ve been here [at Bayern], and I think I’ve shown that.”

The former Tottenham man confessed that he did not enjoy watching on from home during the last Euros, which is why he is keen to be part of the 23-man squad that will fly to Germany.

He added: “It’s s*** sitting at home, not being there is not fun. It’s some of the best times of your life, with the England national team where it is now, there is a great feeling in the camp and you’re training with the best players in the country every day.

“Going away for a month for a tournament and living that together, you miss a lot of things aside from the football, too.”

With Harry Maguire, John Stones, Ezri Konsa, Jarrad Branthwaite, and Marc Guehi ahead of him in the pecking order, it is going to be difficult for Dier to force himself into the squad.

Having said that, if he continues to impress at Bayern, Southgate might consider taking him, given the experience and leadership qualities that the 30-year-old possesses.
