Tottenham player’s agent gives update on new contract but admits delays

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a disappointing season this year, but the emergence of Japhet Tanganga at the back has been a silver lining.

The young central defender was handed his debut by Pochettino against Colchester in the League Cup back in 2019, but managed to break into the first-team under Mourinho.

The Special One has since utilised Tanganga as a left-back, right-back, and centre-back, with the academy graduate having featured 11 times now this season (Wikipedia).

However, with his current contract set to expire next year, Tanganga and Tottenham have been in talks over a new long-term deal.

Tanganga’s agent, Roberto De Fanti, has now revealed that talks have been delayed due to the coronavirus, with the Italian even contracting the virus himself.

However, the agent did add that negotiations will resume when the pandemic is over, while even hinting that Tanganga is already in Gareth Southgate’s mind for a potential England call-up.

De Fanti said (TTW – relayed by Sport Witness): “We were in talks with Tottenham for renewal but this crisis obviously slowed everything down. When it ends we will resume the interrupted speech. We hope that on his return he will also be called into the national team, given that it is rumoured that he was already in Southgate’s thoughts despite his very young age.”
