Tottenham poach Man City coach to fill Jermain Defoe’s old job at Hotspur Way

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the appointment of a new Under-18s coach, who arrives at the club with an impressive resume.

The Spurs academy has not been very successful in producing players for the first team over the last decade and a half.

In fact, statistically, Tottenham are among the worst in the Premier League for promoting academy products to the senior squad of late.

The supporters will be hoping that this will soon change, with top young talents like Mikey Moore and Luca Williams-Barnett coming through the ranks, and it appears that the club are investing in the academy.

Tottenham poach Man City academy coach

Tottenham have confirmed on their website that Jamie Carr has been appointed as the club’s new Under-18s coach, a role previously held by the likes of Jermain Defoe.

Carr will be supported in his role by current U18 assistant coaches Bradley Allen and Chris Riley, along with Head of Academy Coaching Joe Staunton.

The 34-year-old arrives at Hotspur Way after spending seven years with Man City’s academy, where he was in charge of their U16s and served as an assistant coach for their U18s.

The Irishman began his coaching career at Reading’s academy and had a brief stint coaching youngsters in India before making the move to City in 2018.

Jamie Carr delighted ahead of Spurs challenge

The newcomer admitted that he is excited about taking charge of Tottenham’s U18s, given the kind of talent currently in the team.

Carr said in his first interview at the North London club: “I’m thrilled to be joining Spurs, a fantastic club with a rich history of developing young players.

“We have so much exciting young talent here and we’re in a great place already with the Under-18s, so I look forward to integrating with the team of staff and players and helping to continue the incredible work that’s taking place.

“Player development is something I’m very passionate about, so to have the chance to come here and work with the Under-18s, both individually and collectively, to help them on their footballing journeys is something that really excites me.”

Meanwhile, academy director Simon Davies is confident that Carr is the right fit for the club, given the experience he brings to the Hotspur Way academy setup.

Davies said about the appointment: “We’re delighted to have Jamie on board. He arrives with a wealth of coaching experience, which has included working around the Professional Development Phase at Manchester City, where he’s made a positive impact on the journeys of a number of elite players.

“He’s a fantastic coach and, crucially, a fantastic person, meaning he’s an excellent fit for our Academy. I look forward to seeing him integrate with our highly-skilled and dedicated team of staff and working for the benefit of our young players.”
