Tottenham prepared to smash transfer record with £82.7m signing of midfielder this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly among the clubs vying for the signature of Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, with the North London side potentially willing to spend up to €100m (£82.7m) to secure his transfer this summer.

Just like Tottenham Hotspur have done so far this season, Niko Kovac’s Borussia Dortmund have struggled domestically in the Bundesliga.

Last year’s UEFA Champions League finalists currently find themselves in tenth position in Bundesliga table and seven points adrift of fourth-placed SC Freiburg.

With Champions League qualification looking very unlikely through the Bundesliga, Dortmund would need to win it outight this campaign for them to feature in the competition next season.

Should they miss out on Champions League football entirely next campaign, the club’s finances are set to take a major hit.

Tottenham under the management of Ange Postecoglou find themselves in a similar boat with their best hopes of securing European football next season resulting in Europa League success.

Tottenham Hotspur show interest in Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens

German journalist Christian Falk has revealed in an interview with SportBild that Borussia Dortmund may be compelled to sell players if they miss out on Champions League qualification for next season.

The journalist has revealed that several of the Dortmund’s key players including Gittens, have already been linked with potential moves away.

Tottenham are said to have been named as one of the 20-year-old’s admirers and Falk believes it is not unrealistic if they were to pay £82.8m to secure his signature.

Supporters will be familar with Falk over his blow-by-blow coverage of Mathys Tel’s transfer to Tottenham in the January window.

Tottenham would face a battle to sign Gittens

He said: “Dortmund crashed in the league, the Champions League is getting further and further away, and with that the income from the Champions League next season,” he told SportBILD.

“They have to win it to be in it again. If they miss out, they’ll have to sell players and Gittens is highly regarded. Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham are said to be offering €100m. You have to say that would be nice money.

“Hans-Joachim Watzke recently admitted that they will have to sell one or two players if they miss out on the Champions League. So, a transfer for Gittens could happen.

“The English have the money; they have the TV contracts. Bayern Munich won’t pay this summer, and they could have him with that. But yes, Tottenham I think they’ll bet big.”
