Tottenham Hotspur have been hit with a major punishment by UEFA after three of the club’s fans were allegedly caught making Nazi salutes in the club’s previous Champions League fixture.

Spurs secured direct qualification to the round of 16 as well as a top-four finish in the league phase after beating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in January.

The win capped off an extremely impressive first half of the Champions League campaign for the Lilywhites, who will resume the competition with a round of 16 tie against Atletico Madrid next week.

Tottenham handed suspended ban on away fans after alleged gesture

According to The Athletic, three Tottenham supporters were reported for making alleged Nazi salutes at Deutsche Bank Park vs Eintracht Frankfurt.

Spurs handed bans to all three supporters “indefinitely”, and UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) has now punished the club for the incident.

They have decided to hand Tottenham a €30,000 fine and ban the club from selling tickets to their away supporters for their next competitive UEFA match.

However, the ticket sales ban is suspended for a probationary period of a year, which means that Tottenham fans can travel to the Metropolitano Stadium for the first leg next week.

The sanction will come into force if the club is found guilty of another offence within that period.

Spurs pledge full cooperation with the authorities

Tottenham have responded to UEFA’s decision, making it clear that they stand against all forms of discrimination.

They revealed that they have handed down indefinite bans to the three supporters who allegedly made the gestures and that they have been cooperating with all relevant authorities involved.

Spurs’ statement reads: “The club has been informed of sanctions handed down to us by UEFA following the utterly abhorrent conduct of a small number of individuals at our recent Champions League away match in Frankfurt. The club has cooperated fully with UEFA’s investigation, as well as with German police on the night and, subsequently, the Met Police.

“We can confirm that all three individuals found to be making Nazi salutes towards Eintracht Frankfurt fans have been identified and have received indefinite bans under the club’s Sanctions and Banning Policy.

“The club stands firmly against all forms of discrimination and has therefore taken the strongest possible action. The disgusting behaviour of a minority of so-called fans on the night is in no way reflective of the values of our club and its supporters.”
