Tottenham remain interested in Barcelona player after making January enquiry

Tottenham Hotspur are battling a London rival for a Barcelona star, whose future appears to be the subject of a tug of war as his current deal runs out.

According to various reports, Spurs wanted to add another centre-back to their squad in the summer, but they were unable to do so before the window slammed shut.

There have already been suggestions that Tottenham have started ground work on signing a top-class defender in January.

At the start of the summer transfer window, it was reported that Tottenham were eyeing a move for Barcelona’s Eric Garcia, and it has now emerged that the Lilywhites remain keen on the 24-year-old.

Tottenham are battling London rivals for Eric Garcia

This update comes from TBR Football, who state that Tottenham Hotspur remain keen on Garcia after first enquiring about his availability during January of last year.

However, the outlet reveals that Thomas Frank’s men will not have a free run at the Spain international, with London rivals, Chelsea, also circling over the player.

Garcia’s current deal at Camp Nou runs out next summer, and it is revealed that Barca are now ‘deep in talks’ with the defender over a new long-term deal.

The Catalan giants are said to be confident that the centre-back will soon put pen to paper on a new deal.

Barca’s financial problems may open the door for Garcia’s sale

TBR Football explain that the La Liga giants remain in a ‘precarious financial position’ and are thus assessing which players to offload in the upcoming transfer window.

It is pointed out that Garcia could start talks with non-Spanish clubs over a pre-contract agreement in January should he not agree a new contract before then.

The publication asserts that if Barca’s contract talks with the former Man City man reach an impasse, they will look to cash in on him in January, with the two London clubs ready to pounce.
