Tottenham reveal two players have changed squad numbers ahead of new season

Tottenham have revealed Cristian Romero and Oliver Skipp will wear new shirt numbers for the new campaign.

Romero, who joined Spurs from Atalanta last summer, took the No. 4 shirt on his arrival which was previously occupied by Toby Alderweireld before he left the club.

But the Argentina international defender has altered his preferences ahead of the new season, taking the No. 17 jersey which had been unclaimed since Moussa Sissoko’s departure.

Romero’s switch sees him return to a digit of familiarity, having previously worn it during his time with Argentine side Club Atletico Belgrano and Serie A’s Genoa and Atalanta (Transfermarkt).

Meanwhile, Romero’s old No. 4 has been snapped up quickly with Skipp taking possession of it after a strong breakthrough season last term.

The 21-year-old previously held the No. 52 and most recently the No. 29 shirt respectively with the change signalling a fresh start to the campaign after returning from a lengthy injury layoff.

Romero picking 17 will have confused plenty of supporters given his old number was more suited to defensive players, but he has a connection with that digit from the past.

Skipp has come a long way pretty quickly with some of his jersey changes and it indicated he is at the club for the long-term and looking to cement his place.
