Tottenham stand still as transfer target agrees personal terms elsewhere

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a major setback in their pursuit of Johnny Cardoso, with reports emerging that Atletico Madrid have now reached an agreement with the midfielder.

We reported a few days back that Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a quadruple blow this summer window, with several of their targets looking to secure moves elsewhere.

On our list was Johnny Cardoso of Real Betis, whom Spurs have a £21 million option to buy this summer, as the clause was inserted in the deal that saw Giovani Lo Celso move to Spain.

It has been reported in recent weeks that despite Tottenham’s option to buy, Cardoso is not keen on a move to Spurs, with the American international said to be happy in Spain, as Atletico Madrid are also interested in his services.

Atletico Madrid agree personal terms with Johnny Cardoso

Tottenham Hotspur have now been handed a further blow, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Atletico Madrid have agreed terms with Johnny Cardoso.

The Italian journalist has stated that Diego Simeone’s men are now advancing in talks to get a deal done with Real Betis.

The package of the deal is reported to be around €30 million (approximately £25.5 million) with bonuses, and a possibility of players being part of the agreement now being discussed.

His tweet on X reads: “Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement with Johnny Cardoso on personal terms and are advancing in talks to get a deal done with Real Betis. Package deal around €30m with bonuses and also potential players as part of the agreement now being discussed.”

Spurs midfield stance softens as Yves Bissouma impresses

It was only revealed yesterday that Tottenham are not keen on taking up their £21 million option to buy Cardoso.

It was reported that the north London club are reconsidering their stand on Yves Bissouma, whose future at Spurs was sealed, following reports that Bissouma was set to depart after crunch talks with Tottenham.

Indeed, Bissouma impressed in the closing stages of last season with standout performances in the semi-final and final of the Europa League, and it seems all hope is not lost on the midfielder.

Spurs are still said to be keen on strengthening their midfield this transfer window, but with uncertainty around Postecoglou’s future, it seems as though Tottenham’s transfer activities are on hold.
