Tottenham star charged by the FA for ‘aggressive’ incident against Liverpool

A Tottenham Hotspur centre-back has been hit with a charge by the FA for an incident that happened against Liverpool.

Both Xavi Simons and Cristian Romero were sent off controversially against Liverpool, and there was also plenty of consternation at Tottenham about the decision not to rule out Hugo Ekitike’s goal.

Over the last few days, there have also been calls for Micky van de Ven to be retrospectively punished for his tackle on Alexander Isak during Liverpool’s opening goal.

However, it is his centre-back partner, Romero, who has been charged following Tottenham’s 2-1 loss.

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero charged by the Football Association

The FA have now charged the Argentine for ‘failing to promptly leave the field’ and for confronting the official after he was shown a red card

The Tottenham centre-back received his first yellow for aggressively complaining about Ekitike’s goal and his second one in stoppage time for kicking out at Ibrahima Konate.

The FA’s statement reads: “Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero has been charged following their Premier League match against Liverpool on Saturday 20 December.

“It’s alleged that he acted in an improper manner by failing to promptly leave the field of play and/or behaving in a confrontational and/or aggressive manner towards the match referee after being sent off in the 93rd minute. Cristian Romero has until Friday 2 January 2026 to respond.”

Romero has been criticised heavily for his behaviour

The Tottenham captain has picked up more yellow cards than any other Premier League player this season, and he has received a lot of flak following his sending off against Liverpool.

Some journalists have labelled Romero ‘a complete liability’ to Spurs, while others have questioned his ability, suggesting that the Tottenham star is an ‘average’ defender.

Romero will miss Tottenham’s trip to Selhurst Park on Sunday, with the defender now set to serve a one-match suspension after his sending off against Liverpool.
