News broke earlier this week that Jan Vertonghen would be able to talk to non-English clubs about a possible transfer in just three months.
Vertonghen’s current contract runs out at the end of this season, but Spurs have the option to extend it by a further year.
Reports now suggest that Tottenham will do just that, before the Belgian defender is available to talk to other clubs.
Spurs are said to be on the brink of extending the deal.
This should fend off any interest from big European parties.
Jan Vertonghen has been a main stay in the Tottenham defence since his arrival in 2012, and has sparked a solid partnership with both Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez.
Tottenham fans will be glad to see the defender committing an extra year to the club, and will hope that Daniel Levy chooses to offer the centre-back a longer deal in the summer.
How happy are you to see that Vertonghen’s contract may be extended?
[@SunSport] now understands Tottenham Hotspur are on the brink of extending defender Jan Vertonghen’s contract.
The announcement of a new contract being awarded is now likely to fend off any previous interested clubs in the Spurs centre-back.#THFC #COYSpic.twitter.com/l5FQEIAlyf
