Tottenham star is setting ‘no limits’ after making international debut at age 27

Guglielmo Vicario expressed his delight at winning his first cap for Italy but refused to set a limit on his ambitions going forward.

Spurs fans will feel that Vicario’s debut for his national side was long overdue, given how well he has done at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since his move from Empoli last summer.

The 27-year-old has been among the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and apart from coming to Spurs’ rescue time and again, he has also showcased excellent leadership skills in North London.

However, Vicario’s path is blocked by a world-class goalkeeper in the form of Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has been Italy’s undisputed number one for many years.

The Tottenham man was finally handed his first cap for his country on Sunday as Luciano Spaletti’s men emerged 2-0 winners over Ecuador at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.

Guglielmo Vicario achieves his Italian dream

When asked how it felt to make his debut, Vicario told RAI Sport (as relayed by TMW): “It is a target I had set for myself, and I am so pleased to have done it with a clean sheet and a victory. We deserved the win tonight.”

The Spurs star was pleased with the performance that the Azzuri delivered, praising his teammates for showing character and taking advantage at the right moment.

He continued: “We did well to understand when the right moments were to suffer under pressure and go on the counter-attack, as that is how we scored the second goal.

“It’s about reading the various phases of the match. You can suffer a little, but the important thing is to know what to do.”

When asked what his next aim is, the goalkeeper responded: “My objective is to improve day after day, without setting limits and without flying too close to the sun either. I try to experience the present and expect the maximum from myself.”

Realistically speaking, Vicario does not have much of a chance of becoming Italy’s number unless Donnarumma has a sudden and unexpected decline.

However, the 27-year-old would undoubtedly be a very useful voice to have in the dressing room for the the Azzuri in the next few major tournaments.
