Cristian Romero has been named in the EA Sports FIFA Team of the Week on the back of his impressive showing against Chelsea.
Romero was Tottenham’s best defender on show in the London derby on Sunday as the home side restricted Chelsea to barely any clear-cut chances through the 90 minutes.
Most of the Blues’ attacking threat came from their left side but the Argentine dealt with the likes of Joao Felix and Kai Havertz impressively, barely allowing them a kick inside the box.
Dejan Kulusevski perhaps summed up Romero’s performance the best, simply commenting “Animal” on 24-year-old’s Instagram post following Tottenham’s 2-0 win.
It is no coincidence that the 24-year-old was not in the starting eleven for Spurs’ losses against Sheffield United in the FA Cup and their drubbing against Leicester two weeks ago – games where the Lilywhites struggled defensively.
Romero has been rewarded with an In-Form card on FIFA for his performance against Chelsea, with his rating in the game going up to 86 temporarily.

There is no doubt that we are much weaker as a defensive unit when Romero does not play, with neither Sanchez nor Tanganga being anywhere near the same quality as the Argentine.
One can argue that signing a backup right centre-back should be an even bigger priority than a left centre-back in the summer, given the drop-off between Romero and the other options.
