Tottenham star makes the FIFA Team of the Week after recent displays

Tottenham wing-back Emerson Royal has been named in EA Sports’ FIFA Team of the Week in light of his impressive showing against West Ham United.

It is fair to say that the vast majority of Tottenham fans would have been happy to see Emerson let go during the January transfer window and many would have expected it to happen, given the Brazilian’s struggles to adapt to the demands of the right wing-back role.

It certainly raised some eyebrows when Spurs decided to offload Djed Spence (on loan) and Matt Doherty last month to make way for Pedro Porro while choosing to hang on to the former Real Betis man.

However, the decision has been vindicated, with Emerson putting in some excellent displays over the last couple of weeks, even deservedly keeping Porro out of the starting eleven.

After his defensive masterclass against Manchester City two weeks ago, Emerson showed what he can do at the other end of the pitch on Sunday, proving a handful for the Hammers backline throughout the 90 minutes while also opening the scoring for the Lilywhites.

The right-back has been rewarded with an In-Form card on FIFA as a result, with his rating in the game going up to 84.

Emerson’s turnaround is another lesson to fans not to second-guess the decisions of the coaching staff, who get to watch these players train day in and day out, and are thus better judges of what they are capable of.

While it is completely understandable to discuss and debate selections (which is a lot of fun), anyone who writes players off as ‘useless’ or ‘terrible’ needs to develop some humility.
