Tottenham star misses out on England call-up despite fine form this season

Eric Dier has missed out on an England call-up for the upcoming international break, despite being in fine form for Tottenham this season (England).

Dier is one of the few players who both shone in a back four under Nuno Espirito Santo and maintained his levels under Antonio Conte after a switch to a back three.

The English centre-half has slotted into the central sweeper role in that back three, often with Ben Davies on his left and Cristian Romero on his right.

Most recently, Dier recovered from an elbow to the face against Brighton to earn a clean sheet, clearing countless headers from the Tottenham box throughout the 90 minutes.

However, rather than recalling the Spurs defender to the England camp, after he missed out on the EURO 2020 squad, Southgate chose to call up Marc Guehi for the first time.

Harry Maguire, John Stones, Conor Coady, Ben White and Tyrone Mings were also given the nod by the England manager over in-form Dier.

Spurs Web Opinion:

This baffles me a little. Dier has been in top form for Spurs this season, much better form than most of the names that made the list. The fact he has experience in a back four and a back three is also a valuable skill. I’m very surprised by Southgate’s decision.
