Tottenham star named as The Guardian’s 100th best footballer of 2021

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been named in The Guardian’s list of the 100 best footballers in the world for 2021.

The publication conducts votes through a judging panel consisting of former professionals, managers and sports correspondents from around the world to determine which players were the best throughout the year.

With the first 30 names of the list being unveiled on Tuesday, the jury’s vote has seen Tottenham star Hojbjerg just squeeze in, coming in at 100th on the list.

The 26-year-old enjoyed a positive spell in midfield for Tottenham this year but recently saw a run of 52 consecutive Premier League starts for the club come to an end.

Hojbjerg’s performances also transitioned onto the international stage after he put in a number of confident and dominant displays at Euro 2020 during Denmark’s run to the semi-finals.

He played every minute of the campaign and recorded three assists which was enough to see him voted into the competition’s official Team of the Tournament at its conclusion.

The following subsequent 30 names were revealed on Wednesday with no further Spurs players included before the next set later today leading up to the final countdown of the top 10 on Christmas Eve.

Spurs Web Opinion

Hojbjerg has been one of the ever-present players in the Spurs line-up and he performed well for Denmark at Euro 2020, so he is definitely deserving of this recognition. He faltered a little during the year but that could be due to being played so often and not having much rest.
