Tottenham star offers to play in goal to get some World Cup minutes

Eric Dier has claimed he would happily pull on the goalkeeper gloves and play between the sticks for the Three Lions just to get some World Cup minutes over the next month and a half.

The prestigious international tournament kicked off yesterday evening with Ecuador defeating hosts Qatar 2-0 in the opening group stage match.

England fans do not have long to wait for their turn, as the Three Lions kick off against Iran at 1 pm UK time today (Monday), with Eric Dier and Harry Kane among those in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Dier has enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence since Antonio Conte joined Tottenham back in November 2021, shifting into the central sweeper role in the Italian’s usual back-three formation.

Despite some patchy form over the past month, Dier has largely taken to the new position like a duck to water, utilising his talent in the air and his long-range passing around the pitch.

When asked about where he would prefer to play for England in the World Cup, the Spurs man insisted he would play in goal just to get on the pitch.

He said (England Official): I’ll play in goal if I have to, it’s a World Cup. I take whatever chance I can get. I feel completely comfortable in any position in defence. Whatever position, I believe in myself to be able to play in any one.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I am desperate to see Eric Dier be an England hero this summer. He is such a likeable figure away from the pitch and people love to jump on his back when he makes a mistake. It would be nice to see him rewarded for his years of service to Spurs.
