Tottenham star pulls out of international squad due to injury concern

Tottenham wing-back Ryan Sessegnon has been forced to pull out of the England U21 squad due to injury (England).

Sessegnon put together a strong end to his Spurs campaign and played a big role as Antonio Conte’s side secured a return to the Champions League.

The 22-year-old was rewarded by earning a call-up to the England U21 fold for their European Championship qualifiers against the Czech Republic, Kosovo, Albania and Slovenia.

But it has been confirmed the Spurs youngster will not play a role in next month’s fixtures having withdrawn from the 24-man squad through injury.

A replacement to step in has not been named, meaning Lee Carsley will have 23 players to choose from for the upcoming ties.

Sessegnon has faced a number of set-backs during his time at Tottenham and had to shake multiple muscle injuries this term.

However, Alasdair Gold has commented that Sessegnon’s England withdrawal is more precautionary than anything, as the defender wants to be ready for a big year under Conte next season.

However, he stepped up to the mark in place of the injured Sergio Reguilon towards the back end of the season, taking his tally up to 22 appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Hopefully, this is indeed just precautionary for Sessegnon as part of managing his load given he has played a lot of football in the second half of the season.

A player that has suffered plenty of injuries before will be even more susceptible to picking up more problems and need to be monitored, and he definitely falls in that category right now.
