A Tottenham star, who came off the bench in the club’s 3-0 loss to Brentford, is undergoing tests after suffering a knock.
Spurs got a reality check in their first Premier League game of the season, with Brentford dominating the away side and hardly giving them a kick for large parts of the game.
However, it was an under-strength Tottenham side that took to the field in their opening clash, with several key attackers and defenders missing out due to injury issues.
While the hope at Spurs is that the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro may be back soon, De Zerbi’s men have now suffered another injury scare.
James Maddison undergoes tests after suffering knock in Tottenham’s loss to Brentford
James Maddison started on the bench and came on in the 67th minute in place of Mikey Moore, but the England international did not have much impact on the game.
In fairness to the attacking midfielder, the result was already sealed by the time he was introduced, but worryingly, it has now emerged that he suffered a knock.
This is according to The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, who revealed that the England international fell awkwardly on his shoulder and had to undergo tests.
However, the early indications are that it is not a serious issue, with the journalist suggesting that the club are hopeful Maddison can be involved against Newcastle on Saturday.
McGrath wrote on X: James Maddison needed checks on a knock sustained in Tottenham’s defeat to Brentford. The 29-year-old fell awkwardly on his shoulder after coming on as he stepped up his comeback. Hopes he’ll be involved at the weekend vs NUFC.”
Why Roberto De Zerbi will not take any risks with Maddison
One would not expect De Zerbi to take any risks with the likes of Maddison, Solanke, and Kulusevski, given that all of them have hardly played any competitive football for the last 12 months.
That perhaps explains why Tottenham are desperate to get several attacking reinforcements through the door before the window slams shut.
De Zerbi will certainly be tempted to hand both Savinho and Omar Marmoush starts against Newcastle next Saturday, with Spurs needing a win in front of their home fans following the bruising loss to Brentford.
