Tottenham star thinks they have only made a ‘so-so’ start to the season

One Tottenham star has given a frank assessment of the team’s early campaign so far this season, calling their start to the season ‘so-so’, despite flashes of promise on the pitch.

A solid start, but far from perfect

After eight matches, Tottenham find themselves in a respectable but not commanding position in the Premier League table, with 13 points from four wins, one draw, and three losses, leaving them seventh—four points shy of the Champions League spots.

The defensive record is mixed, with two clean sheets and nine goals conceded, a number that has raised concerns over their consistency at the back. This vulnerability is underscored by their expected goals conceded (xGc) of 8.9, which highlights that while their defensive setup has managed to limit some chances, the team is still allowing too many high-quality opportunities.

Despite these defensive hiccups, the team has shown moments of promise under the new tactical system. However, those moments have not always translated into maximum points on the board.

Now, with a third of the season’s first half already played, there’s a sense that Tottenham could—and perhaps should—be in a more secure position, with fans and players alike expecting better fortune in the weeks ahead.

A ‘so-so’ start says Guglielmo Vicario

In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Vicario described the season so far as ‘so-so’, pointing out that while the team has shown quality, the results haven’t quite followed.

He said: “From a playing point of view we expressed a lot and perhaps achieved a little less than we deserved. Evidently, if we didn’t collect points, something is missing, there is definitely something to improve, we need to work on it. It’s a so-so start, let’s say, we could have collected more but we look to the future with confidence.”

This reflection is a clear indication that while Spurs have been performing well in certain areas, they have fallen short of converting those performances into a consistent run of results.

The goalkeeper’s comments highlight the team’s awareness of their own potential, while also admitting that improvement is necessary if they are to meet their aspirations this season.

Finding the balance at Tottenham

Statistically speaking, Spurs’ defensive struggles have been a key point of concern, and the numbers tell part of the story—nine goals conceded in just eight games doesn’t inspire confidence, especially when considering the fact that they’ve managed to keep only two clean sheets thus far.

For a club with top-four ambitions, maintaining a solid defensive base is critical, and while their xGc of 8.9 suggests that they’re perhaps conceding close to expected levels, those small margins can make all the difference in tight Premier League contests.

Moving forward, finding the balance between defensive stability and attacking flair will be crucial for Tottenham, and this is likely what the goalkeeper was alluding to when he mentioned that something is still “missing.”

As the season progresses, there will be a greater emphasis on turning strong performances into points, which could be the difference between Spurs chasing Champions League football or settling for a Europa League spot come May.
