Tottenham step up interest in Championship winger

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be keen on signing young Brentford forward Ollie Watkins in January.

Spurs failed to sign a single new player in the summer, becoming the first ever Premier League club to do so.

Tottenham also have a number of key first team stars with contracts running out in the summer, so will need to strengthen in the next two transfer windows to cope.

The likes of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele, Fernando Llorente and Michel Vorm all have deals expiring in the summer.

According to the Bristol Post, Spurs may turn to the Championship to thicken out their squad come the new year.

The 22-year-old Watkins is very highly rated and has been attracting a lot of interest from big Premier League clubs.

Brentford are said to value the winger at £20m, which would be a gamble for Spurs.

Watkins has scored six goals in 15 games for The Bees so far this season.
