Tottenham Hotspur reportedly held talks over a deal for an England midfielder, but Aston Villa are firmly in the driving seat.
It has been reported that signing a new central midfielder is among Tottenham’s priorities this month.
Over the last few weeks, the speculation linking a former Chelsea man with a potential move to Spurs has steadily intensified.
According to previous reports, Tottenham have spoken to Conor Gallagher regarding a January move, while it has also emerged that Atletico Madrid are now ready to cash in on the Spurs target.

Football.London claim that Spurs, who have been long-time admirers of Gallagher, have stepped up their interest in the 25-year-old.
The report says that the Lilywhites looked to sign the midfielder when he left Stamford Bridge in 2024, and they began ‘informal talks’ with Atletico over the weekend.
The La Liga club will only entertain a permanent sale of the England international and are not willing to accept a loan offer, even if it comes with an obligation to buy in the summer.
Aston Villa have already made an offer for Gallagher
Football.London go onto explain that Aston Villa are also in talks with the Spanish side regarding a deal for the Chelsea academy graduate. In fact, it is revealed that the Villans have already made an offer for Gallagher, which has been on the table for a week.
Ben Jacobs and Fabrizio Romano have gone on to report that Gallagher may only cost £25m in January, while Aston Villa are ‘on the verge’ of reaching an agreement with Atletico.
Another unnamed European club have also shown an interest in the midfielder, but they are reluctant to do a permanent deal.
