Tottenham Hotspur have received a response from Benfica after making an opening offer for winger Andreas Schjelderup.
While Tottenham continue to push for big-name wingers such as Savinho and Coady Gakpo, the speculation linking the Norway international with a move to N17 is not going away.
Schjelderup is said to be one of the wingers at the top of Spurs’ wishlist, on the back of his outstanding showing at the World Cup.
Tottenham have already reached out to Benfica about the 22-year-old, and it has now emerged that the Lilywhites have sent their opening offer for the player.
Benfica respond to Tottenham’s offer for Andreas Schjelderup
According to Portuguese outlet Now (via Bola na Rede and Sport Witness), Spurs have offered €45m (£38.8m) upfront plus a further €10m (£8.6m) in bonuses for the pacy winger.
That takes the North London club’s overall package for Schjelderup to €55m (£47.4m), and Benfica have now responded.
Rather than disagreeing with the valuation, the Eagles have informed Tottenham that they want them to change the structure of the deal.
Benfica want €50m (£43.1m) as a guaranteed fee for Schjelderup, with the remaining €5m (£4.3m) made up of performance-related bonuses.
Marco Silva wants to keep Schjelderup but may lose him
This update backs up what other sources have reported over recent weeks by confirming that Marco Silva has attempted to convince the Norwegian to stay.
The former Fulham boss has informed Schjelderup that he is a key part of his plans for the upcoming season.
However, the 22-year-old has just two years left on his deal at the Estádio da Luz, and Benfica’s efforts to tie him down to a new contract have not been successful so far.
