Tottenham Supporters’ Trust urges club to do ‘bare minimum’ to make up for Atletico Madrid thrashing

The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust (THST) have been extremely critical of the club’s performance in the first leg against Atletico Madrid and have made a demand following the 5-2 loss.

Not many Spurs fans expected their side to get something from the first leg at the Metropolitano Stadium, but they would have expected more of a fight from their players than what they saw.

The away side essentially found themselves out of the tie with just 22 minutes played as Atletico raced into a 4-0 lead at the start of the clash.

Their thrashing shows just how far away Tottenham are at the moment from the elite clubs around Europe, with alarm bells ringing at N17.

THST make demand for Tottenham fans who travelled to Madrid

The Trust have now described the performance and result at the Spanish capital as ‘disgraceful’ and suggested that repeated poor decisions by the club’s hierarchy have led the team to this situation.

They suggested that Tottenham Hotspur are sleepwalking off a cliff and called on the club to compensate the fans who travelled to Madrid to watch that shambolic performance.

THST wrote on X: “Tonight’s performance and result is a total disgrace. It’s symptomatic of the abysmal state of things at Spurs right now. From the January transfer window to the management appointments, the lack of leadership and a total absence of anyone with a Spurs pedigree informing these decisions. Where is the Daring to Do? Where are the Echoes of Glory? Emergency action is needed as right now we are sleep walking off the edge of a cliff.

“Being a Spurs fan has never been so difficult but supporters will not sit by and watch the club continue to decline. There will be more to follow… At the very least, those in Madrid should have their match tickets refunded. But all we really care about is that the club make us proud. We are here to support the team and be the 12th man. But we all deserve so much more.”

Does the Atletico Madrid thrashing have a silver lining for Spurs?

If there is one silver lining from essentially being knocked out of the Champions League for Tottenham, it is that they can now fully focus on their nine league games left.

It can be argued that Spurs now look the most likely team to go down ahead of West Ham and Nottingham Forest, given how poor their form has been since the start of the calendar year.

The last thing the club needs at this time is to have the distraction of progressing further in the Champions League, which is not a competition they have a chance of winning anyway this season.
