Tottenham target will be available for free this summer, he was once worth £60m

A senior Bayern Munich official has confirmed that a final decision has now been made over the future of Tottenham target Leon Goretzka.

It was revealed that Tottenham had expressed an interest in landing Leon Goretzka, who was initially expected to leave Bayern Munich when his contract runs out at the end of the season.

However, it subsequently emerged that Spurs were trying to secure Goretzka before Monday’s transfer deadline, having brought forward their interest.

The same update stated that Spurs and other clubs were waiting for Bayern Munich to make a final decision on the 30-year-old, and the Bundesliga giants have now confirmed their decision.

Bayern Munich reveal when Tottenham target Leon Goretzka will be leaving

Bayern’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, has now confirmed that the German international will not be leaving before Monday’s transfer deadline.

However, he announced that the two parties have agreed to go their separate ways when the midfielder’s deal runs out in June.

Freund told BILD: “Leon has decided to stay with FC Bayern Munich. We can now also say: Leon Goretzka’s time at FC Bayern will be over in the summer. He will be taking a different path.

“Leon (who joined from Schalke in the summer of 2018; ed.) will have been with FC Bayern Munich for eight years. Extremely successful, extremely strong in the way he has presented himself here as a person and as a player.

“But it’s not over. He will fight with the team in the coming months so that we can achieve great things. And he feels that too. Therefore, I think we’ve had very, very good discussions and want to be completely open about it and communicate openly.”

Spurs may face competition for Goretzka from European giants

One would expect the Lilywhites to be at the table for the 30-year-old in the summer as he decides on his next destination. That decision may depend on the future of Joao Palhinha in N17, though.

Tottenham Hotspur will also have to battle some of the biggest clubs in Europe to secure Goretzka, who TransferMarkt say was worth €70m (£60m) at his peak.

According to some sources, Spurs will have to overcome competition from Barcelona, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid for Goretzka.
