Tottenham tipped to battle Chelsea and Newcastle for £86m star striker

Tottenham Hotspur are turning their attention to a prolific Spanish centre-forward, but they are not the only Premier League club interested in the player.

Thomas Frank has struggled for options upfront this season, with Dominic Solanke and Randal Kolo Muani being sidelined, while Richarlison is yet to convince everyone that he is the answer for Spurs.

As a result, it appears that Tottenham Hotspur are now turning their attention to a number nine, who has found the back of the net five times since the start of the season.

Over recent days, some outlets have said that Spurs have been extremely impressed with Porto striker Samu Aghehowa and are plotting a move for him in the January window.

Tottenham may face competition for Samu Aghehowa

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has now confirmed that the Spain international is indeed on Tottenham’s radar, but he revealed that the Lilywhites would have to meet his £86m release clause to sign him.

Additionally, he asserted that both Newcastle United and Chelsea have tried to sign the 21-year-old in the past.

O’Rourke told Football Insider: “I’m sure he’s [Aghehowa] somebody who’s maybe on the list of Tottenham and other clubs in the Premier League. Chelsea came very close to signing him a couple of transfer windows ago before the player decided to stay.

“Then Newcastle had him on their list in the summer window as they looked at potential replacements for Alexander Isak before signing Nick Woltemade. So I think he’s a top young player, 21 years old, Spain international. It’s no surprise that Tottenham and all these other big clubs in the Premier League are looking at him.

“He’s a player with huge potential and could really develop into one of the best strikers in Europe, if he continues his rise. I think that’s why these Premier League clubs are looking at him. He has got a release clause in his contract at Porto of around £86million, which is a big price tag on his head.

“But, I think if he continues what he’s doing right now and develops as a player and fulfils his potential, that could be a decent fee for somebody who wants to take him. [For] Tottenham, again, the number nine is coming a bit of an issue for them in some respects. Solanke’s had his injury problems so far this season.

“Then Richarlison has obviously slotted in and done quite well there, but there’s been ongoing speculation in regards to his future. Porto will be doing well to hang on to him [Aghehowa] in the next couple of transfer windows because I’m sure that interest will remain.”

Spurs could use cash injection to secure Aghehowa

TEAMtalk relay this information by O’Rourke and confirm that their own sources have also backed up Tottenham’s interest in the Porto star.

The outlet suggests that the Lilywhites could use the £100m cash injection from ENIC towards landing the former Atletico Madrid star.

The publication adds that the North London club see Aghehowa as a player who can give Thomas Frank’s team ‘a clinical edge’ and aid their attempts to get into the top four.
