Tottenham tipped to make potential future £40m approach for Aston Villa star

Tottenham Hotspur kicked off their Premier League campaign on Saturday with the visit of Aston Villa to the new stadium.

While Spurs were looking to start the season off with a win to look to improve upon last season’s fourth place finish in the Premier League, it was the top flight newcomers who took a surprise lead.

Spurs had enjoyed the lions share of the possession and chances during the opening minutes only for a long ball from the Villa defence to split the Spurs back four and allow John McGinn to race through and show great composure to slot past Hugo Lloris.

McGinn was industrious and showed his quality on a number of occasions both defensively and in helping to support the front players in what was an impressive debut.

The 24-year-old former Hibernian has been previously linked with a transfer to Manchester United (Express) with another ex-Hibs player Tam McManus suggesting that United or Tottenham will come calling if he continues to impress for Villa this season.

McManus suggested that McGinn has all the qualities that can make him a key player a top six side and suggested he could be worth as much as £40million.

“I’ve been banging on about John McGinn, and people on social media will know that, for two-and-half-years, even when Hibs were in the Championship,” McManus told PLZ Soccer.

“He was stand-out (player), his work-rate, Hibs fans loved him. He can play as well, he’s not just a bull in a china shop running about. He can put his foot on the ball, see a pass and score a goal as well.

“If he does well at Aston Villa this season, I think you would be looking at Man United or Spurs, somebody like that coming in for him, you are talking £30, £40m.”
