Tottenham top unwanted Premier League table that shows worrying lack of quality

Tottenham Hotspur have topped a Premier League statistic, which suggests there is work to be done on the training pitch.

Tottenham Hotspur have had a strange season up to this point, with the club’s supporters struggling to make a decision on how they feel about Thomas Frank.

For every impressive victory over the likes of Manchester City and Everton, there have been lacklustre displays against Bournemouth and Aston Villa, causing a mixed bag of results.

Spurs have looked good in some areas, but there is one area where they have been poorer than any other team in the Premier League.

Tottenham have been careless in possession

According to Who Scored, Spurs have lost possession due to a bad first touch 18.1 times per game this season, which is more than any other Premier League team.

PlayerLost possession after bad touch (per game)
Kudus3.7
Simons2.8
Kolo Muani2.3
Tel/Bentancur1.3
Odobert/Johnson1.1

This is likely due to a combination of poor ball control, as well as sloppy passes, which have not made it easy to retain possession.

Tottenham’s possession stats as a whole do not tell any one story. They have won and lost matches with more or less possession than their opponents, so there does not appear to be a particular pattern.

However, Frank will be concerned by how much his team are giving the ball away due to very basic mistakes.

Pedro Porro loses the ball more than anyone else in the Premier League

While not all will be down to poor touches, Pedro Porro has lost the ball more times than any other player in the Premier League, according to Statmuse.

The right-back has lost possession 218 times in 11 appearances, and Mohammed Kudus is sixth on the list, being dispossessed 187 times in 10 matches.

Tottenham must work to improve on this after the international break, because having two players in the top ten is simply unacceptable.
