Tottenham warned that ‘false dawn’ in Liverpool ‘papered over cracks’ as Spurs sleepwalk to relegation

Tottenham Hotspur fans will not like Paul Robinson’s assessment of the club’s survival chances following the Lilywhites’ 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest.

Spurs not only had an opportunity to give themselves some breathing space in the race for survival, but they could have also handed one of their relegation rivals a massive blow on Sunday.

Instead, it was the away side who walked away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a comfortable 3-0 win, which leaves the Lilywhites in a desperate position with seven league games left.

With Spurs having not won a single Premier League game this calendar year, the supporters are seemingly losing hope that the club can escape the bottom three.

Paul Robinson saw nothing to suggest Tottenham can get out of this mess

Robinson admitted that Tudor’s men did show some fighting spirit in the first period, responding to a raucous atmosphere at the stadium.

However, he suggested that the home side were always going to pay for not making most of their opportunities, and added that the Lilywhites looked devoid of ideas in the second period.

Robinson told BBC Radio 5 Live: ”From Tottenham’s point of view, there was a lot of fighting spirit in the first half, encouraged by a jubilant crowd who wanted to support their team. But when you go to support your team like that you have to give something back, which didn’t last.

“For all their pressure and territory in the first-half, you felt that the longer this game went on, and they couldn’t convert, it was slipping away from them.

“In the second half, they were tactically weak, they were devoid of ideas, and the manager changed the personnel two or three times, and there was nothing there today to suggest that they can get out of that mess.”

Robinson claims Spurs had a false dawn against Liverpool and Atletico Madrid

Tudor had suggested that Tottenham had turned a corner following their 3-2 win over Atletico, which came just three days after his side’s 1-1 draw at Liverpool.

However, Robinson believes that Spurs’ win last Wednesday and their draw against Liverpool were not good results for the club as they concealed the team’s problems and kept Tudor in the job.

The former Tottenham number one added: “That result, and the false dawn against Liverpool, papered over the cracks for me. It was the worst result they could have had, because a point was no good, and it kept him in a job.

“The performance against Atletico Madrid, put that to one side, because they didn’t come here to play, they didn’t come here to win that game.

“Rewind 10 days when Tottenham came back from Atletico, there were question marks about his job, which is where we are now.”
