Tottenham warned Thomas Frank target would cost ‘huge sum’ in January due to 2029 contract

Tottenham have been warned by a journalist that it will be very difficult for them to strike a January deal for an England international, who Thomas Frank is a big fan of.

After failing to seal a move away from Spurs in the summer, it is widely expected that Yves Bissouma will leave Tottenham in January.

Based on reports over the last week, it appears that the Lilywhites have already decided who they want to replace the Malian with.

It has been claimed by several sources that Tottenham view Conor Gallagher as a perfect fit for Thomas Frank’s midfield, and are ready to test Atletico’s resolve to hold onto the midfielder.

Why Conor Gallagher deal may be difficult for Tottenham to pull off in January

Journalist Pete O’Rourke is not surprised that Tottenham are sniffing around the former Chelsea man, who has fallen down the pecking order at the Metropolitano Stadium.

However, O’Rourke suggested that even though Gallagher may not break into the La Liga side’s starting eleven, Diego Simeone’s men may not be willing to weaken their squad mid-season.

When asked about Tottenham’s pursuit of Gallagher, O’Rourke told Football Insider: “It would be a hard deal to do. It’s no surprise that there were some clubs sniffing around Gallagher in the summer. He’s been in and out of the Atletico Madrid side, not played as many minutes as he would like in La Liga, but he did start in the Champions League against Liverpool.

“He’s still got a role to play for Simeone’s side and he’s under contract until 2029, so if they were to even consider selling him, it would take a huge sum of money. That makes it a difficult deal to do in January due to the fee involved and obviously Atletico would need to bring in a replacement for him as well.

“If they progress into the latter stages of the Champions League, they won’t be wanting to lose anybody in the January window, so that’s another obstacle in the way for Spurs.”

Why Tottenham may have a chance of landing Gallagher in January

It emerged on TBR Football earlier this week that Gallagher is becoming increasingly frustrated about his lack of game time at Atletico.

With a spot in England’s World Cup squad on the line next summer, the 25-year-old may be tempted to push for a move if his situation does not change.

However, the same outlet suggested that Spurs could face competition from Man United, Newcastle, Everton and Crystal Palace for Gallagher.
