Djed Spence explains why he is ‘a different animal’ when he steps on the pitch

Djed Spence has now spoken about the contrast between his aggressive playing style and his laidback demeanour off the pitch, with the Tottenham man explaining what changes in his head when he walks past that white line.

Spence is quickly becoming one of the biggest fan favourites at Tottenham Hotspur and it is easy to see why the supporters love him.

The 24-year-old never lets the side down and has the confidence to grab games by the scruff of the neck, which is not a quality one would associate with a full-back.

The Englishman has seen his fortunes turn around completely over the last eight months, going from a forgotten man to someone who is now one of Tottenham’s most important players.

Djed Spence explains his mentality on the pitch

While Spence might love expressing himself on the pitch and possesses boundless energy and athleticism, his persona off the field is very different, being a man of few words.

The former Middlesbrough has now explained that dichotomy, revealing that something clicks in his head when he steps out onto the field.

When asked about the contrast between his style of play and personality, Djed Spence told Tottenham’s official website: “I don’t know, really, I’m just a chilled person. I call it ‘chilled in the mind, fire in the belly’ so when I step on the pitch I feel like a different person, different human, different animal.

“I’m just happy to play, whether it’s on the left or the right, whether I can help the team or not, I’m just happy to play.”

The Spurs star admitted that he knows what his main strengths are and insisted that he is not particularly preoccupied with the wingers he comes up against.

He added: “I think I’m pretty decent in tight areas, so whether I’m boxed in or not, I feel I can get out of certain situations so it’s just part of my game. I just look at my own game.

“I don’t analyse the opposition winger too much, I just focus on my own game and when it comes to the day you’ve just got to be ready to fight – so that’s just what I do.”

Spence hailed as an ‘incredible player’ by his Tottenham teammate

The 24-year-old and Destiny Udogie might be competing for the same spot at times but that has seemingly not stopped the pair from helping each other out.

In fact, Udogie described Spence as an ‘incredible player’, admitting that the pair are close friends and that they often share pointers with each other to improve their games.
