Tottenham’s huge error as ex-loanee could potentially move to Barcelona

Tottenham Hotspur have had some huge names go through the club in recent years, from Gareth Bale and Luka Modric to Rafael Van der Vaart and Harry Kane. However, some Spurs fans may have already forgotten young Pau Lopez.

The Spanish U21 goalkeeper arrived in North London back in 2016 on loan from Espanyol, with the aim to impress Pochettino and perhaps act as the successor to Hugo Lloris (Standard).

Unfortunately, during his time at Tottenham, Lopez failed to chalk up a single minute on the pitch, and was reduced to a season in the reserves.

At the time, it seemed as if Tottenham’s scouts had seen something in the youngster, but he had failed to live up to the billing.

However, three years on and it looks as if Spurs made a huge error. Lopez is now Real Betis’ number one shot stopper and a regular in the Spanish international squad at just 24 years of age.

Not only this, but he has also been linked to Barcelona in recent weeks too, in a £30m move (Sport).

Did Spurs let one get away?

Spurs Web Opinion:

With Hugo Lloris coming towards the end of his career, it would be very nice to have Pau Lopez in the squad along with Paulo Gazzaniga to compete for the right to replace him. Who knows, perhaps Spurs never would have signed Gazzaniga if they hadn’t let Lopez go. However, it definitely looks as if they missed out on a sound investment there.
