Tottenham strengthened defensive stocks in January

Spurs secured a deal for Kevin Danso from Lens in the dying stages of the January window and it is fair to say that the transfer was atypical of Tottenham under the new regime, with the club preferring to sign youngsters with a high ceiling.

The signing of the Austrian international was perhaps an acknowledgement by Johan Lange and Ange Postecoglou that Tottenham needed a bit more experience and know-how at the back.

The 26-year-old has tasted Premier League football before at Southampton, which should help make it easier for him to settle into life at Spurs, but it has now emerged that he almost made a move to Roma last summer.

Kevin Danso failed medical at Roma before Tottenham transfer

The Express have now revealed that the Giallorossi had agreed a deal with Lens for Danso‘s transfer, but the deal fell through at the last moment because the defender failed a medical at the Stadio Olimpico.

This could come as worrying news for Spurs fans as the last thing that the club needs is another injury-prone centre-back, given the fitness record of both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

However, the Spurs newcomer insists that he took lessons from the setback last summer, which helped him become the player and character he is today.

Speaking about the failed move to Roma, he told The Express: “Every experience that I’ve gone through in my life has helped me to get where I am today. I hope they will help the club now as well.”

Danso’s career injury record analysed

According to various sources, the reason Danso failed his medical at the Italian capital last year is due to a heart condition.

The issue saw the defender miss the first nine matches of this season before he was cleared to return to the pitch back in October of last year.

However, Tottenham fans will be relieved to know that Danso’s fitness record is exemplary apart from that one episode, with the centre-back having hardly missed any games since 2021.
